Volkswagen have generally smaller on sports cars than other German car manufacturers, but it has produced some classics, and a busy one of them again, as the Scirocco went on sale in Europe in 2008. Originally launched for the 1974 model year as a replacement for the Karmann Ghia, the first Scirocco was sold by 1992 in Germany with a Hauptneukonstruktion while (it had a shorter lifetime in the U.S.: 1975 - '88). The looks of the new version are very different than the originals, but debuted strongly, if two cars finish among the top 15, of 200 competitors in the 2008 24 Hours of Nurburgring and the very strong European sales.
