As are reports that Mercedes-Benz is enhancing its presence in U.S. diesel in a big way come news that the company is also expanding its fleet of hybrid vehicles. According to Automotive News, Silver Arrow wishing to introduce hybrid versions of its C, E and S Class vehicles in just three years. The move is an attempt to prepare legislation for stricter fuel economy in the United States and Europe. The report states that European buyers can expect to see the C-cells and E class cars come to Europe in 2013 and a plug-in hybrid S-Class debut shortly thereafter.

U.S. buyers, meanwhile, are likely to see tech arrives in showrooms of six months after their European cousins. According to Herbert Kohler, head of the company E-Drive and future needs for mobility, the Mercedes-Benz is now moving half of its 5.6 billion dollar budget for research and development on the Exploration powertrain alternatives.

Combined with a heavier diesel fuel assembly, hybrids will go a long way towards making up Mercedes-Benz's corporate average fuel economy.
